Theatreworks' production of Charlotte's Web is based on E.B. White's loving story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a little gray spider named Charlotte. Wilbur has a problem: how to avoid winding up as pork chops! Charlotte, a fine writer and true friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman -- she will create a "miracle." Spinning the words "Some Pig" in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but ensures his place on the farm forever. JUNIE B. JONES

December 6 & 7, 2007 at 10:30am

Dear First-Grade Journal,

Hooray, hooray! TheatreworksUSA is making a brand-new musical (that is a play all jumbled together with singing and dancing, I believe). And what do you know! It's all about me, Junie B. Jones! (The B stands for Beatrice, only I do not like Beatrice. I just like B and that's all.)

This is the bestest musical ever, I tell you! It's got loads of funny songs, and it's based on a bunch of books this lady, Barbara Park, wrote about me and the things I do in first grade.

Junie B., First Grader (at Last!) In first grade, I meet new friends (like Herb and José, but not that tattle-tale May). But my new teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks I might need glasses!

Junie B., Boss of Lunch I get to help my friend, the cafeteria lady! And I get to wear a real actual hair net too! Who knows.... Maybe someday I'll be the boss of the whole lunch operation!

Junie B., One-Man Band The whole entire first grade is having a kickball tournament! Only, when I practice my kicking, I stub my piggy toe so badly I can't play. But my friend Sheldon can't play either, so maybe we can do a half-time show instead!

Whew! I'm glad I can write everything down in my Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal! And you know what? I think I might like first grade after all!

Love, (but not the mushy kind)
Junie B.

Ruby wants to work quietly, but Max is enjoying his noisy toys. Ruby wants to look for costumes, but Max is too busy looking for frogs! Max is no help at all, so Ruby recruits her Bunny Scout friends for assistance. But can they help her finish Grandma's play in time? Find out in this delightful musical based on the top-rated Nickelodeon television show inspired by Rosemary Wells' bunny siblings, Max and Ruby!

WORLD OF WONDER

April 14 & 15, 2008 at 10:30 am

Internationally touring artist Leland Faulkner returns to Tampa with his program World of Wonder, a production that has appeared at festivals in the U.S.A, Asia, and Canada. Celebrating the international nature of physical theatre, it exemplifies the universal language of the mime, actor, and magician. The audience will see the almost forgotten art of shadowgraphy, or hand shadows, witness the amazing art of origami at high speed, see the magic in a simple handkerchief, and share the wisdom of a medieval fool. World of Wonder transports students to a place where they can see the extraordinary in the ordinary, and envision themselves as a creative force that can change the world.

ROMEO & JULIET

April 16, 2008 at 10:30am

The passions of first love, the emotions of teenage rebellion, and the dramatics of family conflicts all take center stage in TheatreworksUSA's biggest production ever: Romeo & Juliet.  In this critically acclaimed production of the classic text with a pulsing rock incidental score, Theatreworks takes Shakespeare’s language to the streets of a futuristic crumbling urban wasteland called Verona. Here, the star-crossed children of two warring clans secretly dare to love amid eruptions of violence and familial hatred. Although the Capulets and the Montagues suffer the loss of their children, they realize that their hatred can only lead to tragedy, and they vow a new course of harmony, understanding, and peace.

MY HEART IN A SUITCASE

April 23, 2008 at 10:30am

Anne Lehmann and her family no longer feel safe in their Berlin home. Life in Germany is deteriorating quickly; in order to protect their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lehmann may have to say goodbye to her forever. Now Anne must struggle to bring meaning out of despair, to cling to love and hope even in a world that seems to be filled with hatred and violence.  This production eloquently portrays what happened in Germany and other occupied nations prior to and during World War II – and how a heroine survived thanks to her own courage and the generosity of others – to teach the importance of combating intolerance.  The ultimate goal is to motivate children not only to appreciate reading and the theatre but also to love and respect all their fellow human beings.
